Frequent Questions for CLSD Communities

This section includes answers to the most commonly asked questions from our partners in Crete, Kearney, Schuyler, Scottsbluff, and Walthill, Nebraska. If you can't find the answer you are looking for, please email your question to Greta Carlson or submit through the contact form on this website.

  1. How do I get books if I am a provider in Crete, Kearney, Scottsbluff, Schuyler, or Walthill?

Providers in these communities can register here. Please reach out to Greta at gcarlson@nebraskachildren.org with questions.

  2. Is there a cost to the child care provider or center?

Providers in the five eligible communities can receive books at no cost. The NGR Digital Library is also available to anyone (including outside these five communities) at no cost.

  3. Are preschools eligible for Nebraska Growing Readers?

Yes, preschool programs in Crete, Kearney, Schuyler, Scottsbluff, and Walthill are eligible.

  4. When will I receive books?

During active registrations, providers who register receive shipments of books by mail approximately 4 weeks after registering. Subsequently, you will receive monthly boxes of books through the mail for a specified period.

  5. How often will I receive books?

Once you have registered, you should receive an email confirmation. Approximately four weeks after registration, your books should ship. If you have any questions about shipping, please contact Nicholas McGuffee of Unite for Literacy at nicholas.mcguffee@uniteforliteracy.com.

  6. How does Nebraska Growing Readers decide what books to send me?

Unite for Literacy packages the sets of books each month. The number of books and which developmentally appropriate titles are included are based on what was indicated in the provider registration. We cannot individualize book distribution to different sites.

  7. Whom should I contact if I have questions or need more books?

Questions concerning NGR should be directed to Greta at gcarlson@nebraskachildern.org.

  8. How long will I receive books?

The CLSD federal grant program is a 5-year grant running October 2024 through September 2029. Year 2 funds are currently in use, and we will alert program partners of any changes in funding that may impact their program.

  9. How do I withdraw from the program?

You can withdraw from the program at any time. Please contact Greta Carlson at gcarlson@nebraskachildren.org to change your registration status.

  10. What am I required to do as a book distribution site?

    See the Program Guidelines document.

  11. How is this program funded?

The Comprehensive Literacy State Development (CLSD) grant is a federal Department of Education program. Nebraska Department of Education was awarded a CLSD grant in 2024. Nebraska Children and Families Foundation was granted a sub-award in August of 2025 for Nebraska Growing Readers.
